In 2019, hip-hop mainstay 2 Chainz founded the Atlantic Records imprint and rap collective T.R.U. (or The Real University) to “school” promising Atlanta acts.
• In 2019, 2 Chainz signed rappers Hott LockedN and Sleepy Rose. Chainz had grown up around Hott’s father and uncle, and he felt obligated to get the talented lyricist off of the streets.
• That year, Chainz also nabbed Skooly—the 26-year-old rapper had been on Chainz’s radar since he cofounded the hip-hop collective Rich Kidz in his teens.
• Chainz discovered Worl—another 2019 signee—through a friend. Impressed by the rapper’s dedication to his craft and to his community, Chainz recruited him to the collective.
• T.R.U. made its debut with the 2019 single “Shoot It Out.” Skooly isn’t on the track, but he teamed up with Chainz in 2020 for the group’s second offering, “Virgil Discount.”
• At the top of 2020, T.R.U. delivered its debut album, No Face No Case, which features the likes of Quavo, NLE Choppa, and Quando Rondo.
