Hometown

Formed
September 11, 2008
Genre
Alternative
Since 2008, the Cleveland quartet Signals Midwest have plied their own brand of angst-filled indie punk. From their 2009 long-player debut to 2019's Pin EP, the group have carved their own path through the often-crowded emo punk scene. Formed by Maxwell Stern (vocals, guitar), Steve Gibson (vocals, drums), and Loren Shumaker (vocals, bass), the three-piece took the emo blueprint created by the likes of Fairweather, Small Brown Bike, and Hot Water Music and mixed it with the post-punk of bands such as the Menzingers. A year after forming the trio issued their self-released debut, Burn the Blueprints. Numerous tour dates followed before the band -- who had expanded to a four-piece with the addition of guitarist Jeff Russell -- were picked up by Tiny Engines to release their sophomore album. Recorded in March 2011 by Adam Wagner, Latitudes and Longitudes was issued at the end of the year, preceded by a split single with Shady Ave. By 2013, after tour dates with the likes of Run Forever and Banquets, the band released their third album, Light on the Lake. Produced by Sidekicks' Toby Reif and recorded, once again, with Wagner, the album also saw guest spots from members of Restorations. A five-track acoustic EP, Wherever I Might Land, appeared the following year to help raise funds for Signals Midwest's first tour of Europe. Constant gigging followed over the next few years, on stages shared with the likes of Braid and Timeshares, before the group returned to the studio, this time with Into It. Over It's Evan Weiss. 2016's At This Age, the band's fourth album, saw them stripping back their songwriting and taking in everything that the band had experienced in their nearly ten years together. Shumaker departed the band, eventually replaced by Ryan Williamson, and the group was geographically split between Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh; it wouldn't be until the end of 2018 before they would return to the studio. Recording with Matt Jordan (Sincere Engineer, You Blew It!) and Adam Beck, the resulting sessions were released in mid-2019 on new label Lauren Records, which issued the six-track EP Pin. ~ Rich Wilson
