About Rudy Ray Moore
Artist Biography
Standup comedian, actor, singer, and producer Rudy Ray Moore may be best known for his starring role in the blaxploitation film DOLEMITE, but his real legacy rests with his recorded comedy routines. Although Moore began his career as an R&B singer, he found his between-song banter drew more of a response from audiences. Moore built a comic style specializing in humor that was explicitly sexual, and more outrageous than the work of contemporaries such as Red Foxx and Richard Pryor. His lengthy discography began in the late 1950s, but it was in the ‘70s that Moore hit his stride with such party records as 1970’s EAT OUT MORE OFTEN and 1971’s THE DIRTY DOZENS. On his comedy records Moore developed the character of Dolemite, which he translated to film in 1975, and reprised in sequels. His other films include PETEY WHEATSTRAW and DISCO GODFATHER. His routines, sometimes spoken in rhyme, can be seen as precursors to rap.
