Rishab Rikhiram Sharma’s quest to make sitar-based music more accessible has led to him exploring sparkling production ranging from the lo-fi to the cinematic, and genres from electronic to fusion, presenting Indian classical music and spiritual songs in a new light.
Born to sitar luthier Sanjay Sharma in New Delhi, the artist moved to New York to study music at the age of 17. By then, he had already received classical training from the legendary sitarist Pandit Ravi Shankar. Sharma, who is considered the last disciple of Shankar, has since taken on different ways to preserve and promote sitar music, and often adds a thematic focus on mental health and spirituality.
While covers and mashups of pop hits were popular on social media, Sharma’s focus on Indian history and tradition have won him an audience like few other regional classical artists of his generation. From a grandiose ode to a historical statesman on “Chanakya” to the Sanskrit chant-filled “Tandavam”, Sharma has also taken to hip-hop on “Text Me When You Reach”, appealing to listeners across generations.
