About Richard Youngs
Artist Biography
Richard Youngs, a reclusive multi-instrumentalist, makes music that ranges over a vast array of styles, taking in folk, progressive rock, avant-garde minimalism, and experimental rock. His 1990 debut was recorded using only a kazoo and acoustic guitar and drew comparisons to Terry Riley’s minimalist classic "In C." His collaborations with Simon Wickham-Smith and Makoto Kawabata (of Japan’s Acid Mothers Temple) took the work of the '90s noise underground movement as their stylistic template, while 1999’s starkly emotive SAPPHIE was reminiscent of legendary English folk artist Nick Drake. Youngs’s work in the early '00s skilfully fused psychedelic rock and Scottish folk.
