Although Generation X fans may remember her in the starring role of TV sitcom JULIA, or as one of the divas on DYNASTY several years later, the gifted actress and singer Diahann Carroll got her start in musical theater in the 1950s. After a supporting role in the movie musical CARMEN JONES, Carroll appeared on Broadway in the Harold Arlen-Truman Capote musical HOUSE OF FLOWERS, receiving a Tony nomination. In 1959, she starred in the Hollywood version of PORGY AND BESS, and thereafter mostly concentrated on her film and TV career.
