Bassist/composer Stephan Crump is a highly regarded improviser whose sound draws upon the post-bop jazz, classical, and avant-garde traditions. He debuted with 1997's Poems & Other Things, but garnered wide acclaim, including a Grammy nomination, for his work as a member of pianist Vijay Iyer's group. He has also worked closely with artists like Joel Harrison, Jen Chapin, and Liberty Ellman, the latter of whom is a member of his string-based Rosetta Trio with Jamie Fox. He has recorded two albums with guitarist Mary Halvorson, including 2015's Emerge. 2016's Rhombal featured his group with Tyshawn Sorey, Ellery Eskelin, and Adam O'Farrill. He has also recorded as a trio with Ingrid Laubrock and Cory Smythe, as on 2019's Channels. With 2022's Rocket Love, Crump showcased his artful and exploratory solo bass work.
