R&B/Soul
The music of hip-hop/R&B singer/songwriter Rene Bonét recalls the golden age of the 1990s and early 2000s with sultry vocals and laid-back, understated beats. Born in Leesburg, Virginia, Bonét struggled to launch a career in her home town, where there wasn't much of a scene, so she decided to move to Atlanta, Georgia. She delivered her first proper release, "Energy," in 2019, then teamed up with beatmaker Weku Did That, who became her regular producer. Two more singles, "Stay" and "One Way Ride," followed in 2021 alongside an EP recorded under her rap-rock alter ego Bully Barbé. Her acoustic cover of Blackstreet's "Before I Let You Go" attracted the praise of the legendary Teddy Riley, and her 2023 single "Nights like This" earned three Grammy nominations. Bonét later inked a distribution deal with Virgin subsidiary SRG/ILS for her 2024 debut album, Voice Memos.
