Composer and producer Ram Sampath is the mind behind some of India’s most memorable songs across film music, folk-fusion projects and pioneering electro-rock and Indian pop. Born in Mumbai to parents who turned him on to The Beatles, Carnatic and Bollywood songs in equal measure, Sampath’s lineage is also connected to T. V. Ramanujam, who founded the famed Mumbai venue Shanmukhananda Hall. In 1997, at the age of 20, Sampath and bandmate Siddharth Achrekar released their self-titled album as Colourblind, introducing a moody kind of electronic rock that was ahead of its time in India. While he was trained in Carnatic vocals as a child, Sampath—whose parents gave him a vinyl record that he would play around with instead of toys—gravitated towards rock music, ad jingles and film songs.
Sampath arguably shaped the sound of ’90s and early 2000s pop in India, working on Shaan’s Love-Ology and Tanha Dil. After he debuted in mainstream Indian cinema with 2002’s Let’s Talk , it took the cocky songs from 2011 movie Delhi Belly for India’s mainstream to recognise Sampath’s boundary-pushing abilities. He only went further, writing evocative songs for social cause-led TV show Satyamev Jayate and deftly representing the face of India’s fusion sound on Coke Studio Season 3. In 2024, Sampath represented stories from India’s heartland on “Sajni Re” from Laapataa Ladies with star voice Arijit Singh.
