Paul Chambers was a renowned session bassist and accompanist known for his exceptional "walking" bass lines. He played with Philly Joe Jones and Red Garland in Miles Davis' 1950s bands, staying with Davis for eight years, the longest of any bandmember. Chambers also recorded extensively with John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins, and others. Though not as revolutionary as Charles Mingus, he excelled in bebop-style solos and arco playing. He began playing bass in the late '40s and worked with Detroit jazz musicians before touring with Paul Quinichette and Bennie Green. Chambers joined Miles Davis' band in 1955 and later formed a trio with Wynton Kelly and Jimmy Cobb, backing Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell. He led several small group sessions in the mid-'50s but worked less in the late '60s due to health issues.
