In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail.
My mom is an amazing singer. I remember waking up early in the morning to her warming up in the piano room. I admired how much work she put into it - how she trained her entire body and mind for singing - for performing - for making people feel. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular?
Cursive, Cursive's Domestica
James Blake, James Blake
TV on the Radio, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
I think these might the most played albums from my life. I love Cursive so much. James Blake changed how I thought of sound completely. And Desperate Youths, this album is why I like music. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song.
“Sober”
I wanted something dry + snappy like Fleetwood Mac but also a big dry vocal, a huge chorus, disco, a middle 8 and a solo. So I built this weird hybrid train of a song that feels like gravity is just pulling the track along like magnets. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?
Meeting Tunde Adibempe, from TVOTR, before my first album came out. I saw their Letterman performance in real time. Not only were these black people in a rock band but they were doing something I’d never heard in my life. And they looked like me. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band?
I want a career in music. I want to make albums, produce records, travel, meet people, and make music my life. That’s always been my goal. Can’t lie though - I’d do alot for a grammy. I want one.
