Formed in Japan in the early '80s, OXZ was an all-female band that rode the line between jagged punk and moody new wave. They released several singles, EPs, and compilation tracks before breaking up in 1989, and in 2020 their complete recorded output was collected on the Captured Tracks discography release Along Ago: 1981-1989. OXZ (pronounced Ox Zed) formed in 1981 in the Kansai region of Osaka. After meeting in school, guitarist/vocalist Mika and bassist/vocalist Hikko decided to start a band. They enlisted drummer Emiko (aka Chasenmaru) and began playing covers of Clash and Sex Pistols songs. When those covers didn't sound great, they began writing their own original music, taking influence from the dark post-punk and new wave sounds emerging at that time. They were performing live by 1982 and in 1984 they presented their first music to the public in the form of a self-titled, self-released 8" EP. By this point the band had established themselves in regional punk circles, toured and played festivals. Another EP, Fall in the Night, surfaced that year on Night Gallery Records. The band played less frequently over the next few years, recording one more EP, 1987's And Blue and Bleed and contributing a song to the West Psychedelia 2 compilation in 1988 before disbanding in 1989. All three members would continue pursuing music to various degrees, with Mika and Emiko starting a new band called Playmate. Decades after OXZ's breakup, their rare records became collectable punk artifacts. In 2020 the Captured Tracks label released Along Ago: 1981-1989, a collection of all their studio recordings as well as unreleased demos. ~ Fred Thomas
