Named after a Quidditch term from the Harry Potter universe, New Zealand's Openside specialize in bright, spirited indie pop. The band formed when punk-pop band Maybe Rave joined forces with vocalist Possum Plows, who was crowned Auckland University’s Songwriter of the Year in 2014. Plows, guitarist/vocalist PJ Shepherd, bass player Harry Carter, and drummer George Powell released their streamlined debut single as Openside, "Worth It," in the spring of 2015. Early singles and the resulting buzz led to a record deal with Warner Music, which released the group's debut EP, Push Back, in 2016. ~ Marcy Donelson
