Dance
Formed in 2006, by artist and musician Stig Olson (b. 1936, Kristinehamn, Sweden; saxophone), Paul Nieman (b. 19 June 1950, London, England; trombone) and Steve Lodder (b. 10 April 1951, St. Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands; keyboards), this band performs an intriguing form of improvised music that has been termed chamber jazz. This term draws attention to their restrained and sometimes austere, classically conceived concepts. Although improvisation is central to their work, the group does structure their performances on a delicately poised notation that permits full rein to individual and collective imagination. The three musicians perform in duo and trio and are frequently presented as a quintet, regular additional musicians including bass players Andy Hamill and Davide Mantovani, and drummer Simon Pearson.
Individually, Olson has played with Keith Hale. Nieman has played with London Jazz Composers Orchestra, Paul Rutherford, Mike Westbrook, and Mônica Vasconcelos. Lodder has worked with George Russell, Vasconcelos, and Andy Sheppard.
