Musical comedy duo Ninja Sex Party pull liberally from ’80s excess, drawing a devoted fanbase with big hair, goofy costumes, and cheeky lyrics set to a synth-pop and glam rock backbeat.
∙ Old improv pal Donald Glover—the actor/musician also known as Childish Gambino—gave them a huge boost in 2009 when he shared the video for one of their earliest songs, “The Decision.”
∙ Largely thanks to the viral hit “Dinosaur Laser Fight,” their 2011 debut, NSFW, became the first of four releases to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Comedy Albums chart.
∙ Starbomb, a side-project with animator and voice actor Arin Hanson (aka Egoraptor), released a trio of chart-toppers filled with humorous hip-hop odes to popular video games.
∙ In 2013, vocalist Dan Avidan joined Hanson as cohost of Game Grumps, a popular gaming web series that was nominated for a pair of Shorty Awards, which honor digital content creators.
∙ Their hit Under the Covers series, launched in 2016, features surprisingly sincere versions of such ’70s and ’80s classics as a-ha’s “Take On Me,” which has more than 13 million views.
∙ Starring Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard, the video for the anti-bullying ballad “Danny Don’t You Know,” from 2018’s Cool Patrol, earned them an invitation to perform on Conan.
