New Regency Orchestra (NRO) is a 20-piece big band. Since 2021, their mission has been to pay homage to the Afro-Cuban musicians from the 1940s to 1990s through the sonic gaze of London's inclusive, intrepid 21st century jazz and R&B scenes. Featuring 12 horns and an eight-piece percussion rhythm section, NRO's sound is hard-driving, bright, powerful, and infectiously danceable; it is also influential, as several likeminded big bands have sprung up in their wake. They rehearsed and played gigs for nearly three years before releasing their eponymous debut album on Mr. Bongo in 2024. ~ Thom Jurek
