About MODIKA.
Artist Biography
In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. One of my earliest musical memories is watching live DVDs with my family. In primary school, a substitute teacher played guitar and sang for us. She later became my first music teacher, teaching me how to play recorder and read music.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? MARO, hortelã Robert Glasper Experiment, Black Radio Selaelo Selota, Lapeng Laka These albums have deeply influenced me. Black Radio blends jazz and R&B in a way that changed the game. Lapeng Laka captures the essence of limpopo music, and Hortelã stands out for its raw, honest simplicity with just guitars and vocals.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Modika” Modika is my favourite song, deeply personal and from my debut EP. It came during a time of identity struggle and features a family praise poem recited by my late aunt. I'm grateful her voice lives on through this song - which carries my surname.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? One of my most memorable experiences was traveling the UK in 2019 with a tribute band. We performed in 21 cities and towns over 30 days. It was an incredible opportunity to connect with new people, to explore different places and different cultures.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I have a long bucket list full of dreams. While I've played on many big stages as a session musician, I’d love to perform as a lead, tour with my original music, and explore certain collaborations. There’s still so much I want to achieve!
