Rock
British punk band Milk Teeth have set aside the usual fast and loud sonic template in favor of the thick distorted guitars, downbeat but catchy melodies, and shifting dynamics of '90s grunge and indie rock. Milk Teeth hail from Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, where lead singer and bassist Becky Blomfield, guitarist and vocalist Josh Bannister, and drummer Oli Holbrook attended the same school. All three were passionate about music and were part of a circle of friends who often helped one another out with various projects. In early 2013, Bannister and Holbrook, who'd had been working on songs together, recorded a set of demos; the tape caught the attention of guitarist Chris Webb, who turned the duo into a trio. When Bannister invited Blomfield to join the group, they adopted the name Milk Teeth, taken from a song by the Japanese Voyeurs. Milk Teeth released a digital single, "Vanilla," in May 2013, and their first EP, Smiling Politely, appeared three months later. The group's early recordings received an enthusiastic response, and they began touring regularly throughout the U.K. and Europe. April 2015 brought a second EP, Sad Sack, and the release was successful enough that well-established American punk label Hopeless Records signed the group and gave Sad Sack an international re-release. In November 2015, Milk Teeth issued a new single, "Brickwork," as a preview of their first full-length, Vile Child, which was released on January 29, 2016. However, shortly before the album's arrival, Milk Teeth announced that Bannister had left the band and guitarist Billy Hutton would be sitting in for him on the group's upcoming live dates in support of the album. Early 2017 saw the band secure a deal with Roadrunner Records and issue the EP Be Nice, followed by a second extended player, Go Away, later that November. Over the next two years there were more lineup shake-ups with the band eventually coalescing as a trio, with Blomfield on vocals and bass, Nervus' Em Foster on guitar, and Jack Kenny on drums. Tours with PUP and Enter Shikari, along with festival dates followed before the trio signed a deal with Music for Nations. 2019 saw them return to the studio with Neil D. Kennedy to record what would become their sophomore effort. The eponymously titled album dropped at the beginning of 2020, preceded by the tracks "Given Up" and "Destroyer." ~ Mark Deming
