Since the mid-'70s, guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Michael Gregory Jackson has proved fluent in jazz, soul, funk, folk, blues, and rock. He began his career working alongside Oliver Lake, David Murray, and Wadada Leo Smith, and appeared on several of the Wildflowers: The New York Loft Jazz Scene compilations. His debut, 1977's Clarity, included Murray, Lake, and Wadada Leo Smith. 1978's Karmonic Suite was solo. He released Heart & Center and Gifts on Novus in 1979. During the '80s, he shortened his name to Michael Gregory and delivered eight albums under that moniker, including the Nile Rodgers-produced Situation X (1983), Red (1998), and Towards the Sun (2001). He returned to recording under his full name for 2015's Endogeny & Exogamy, 2017's Spirit Signal Strata, 2022's Electric Git Box, and FLowSonic in 2023. In 2025 he re-released the 1977 set Frequency Equilibrium Koan, that included Hemphill, akLaff, and cellist Abdul Wadud.
