About Maya Jane Coles
Artist Biography
Maya Jane Coles may not have set out to become a bridge between gritty underground house and high-gloss pop, but that’s what she did with her breakout single, 2010’s “What They Say.” First, the sultry tune helped kick off a deep-house revival; four years later, Nicki Minaj sampled it for “Truffle Butter,” and Katy Perry did the same for 2017’s “Swish Swish.” Such stylistic shifts are hardly unfamiliar to Coles, who was born in London in 1988 and began producing hip-hop at 15. Once she discovered clubbing, she threw herself into house music. She released her debut single, “Sick Panda,” in 2008 and kept a relatively low profile until “What They Say” made her a star overnight. Since then, she’s recorded eclectic, deep-diving mixes for DJ-Kicks (Maya Jane Coles) [DJ Mix] and fabric 75 (DJ Mix), while on albums like 2017’s Take Flight, she’s branched into downtempo, electro, and breakbeat. (Meanwhile, she moonlights in the bass-music world as Nocturnal Sunshine.) Developing a signature flair for moody, low-lit tunes at virtually every tempo, Coles has proven herself as consistent as she is versatile.
