About Matthew Herbert
Born
1972
Genre
Electronic
Whether working under one of his multitude of handles (Wishmountain, Doctor Rockit, Radio Boy, etc.), or his most famous eponym, Herbert, British-born producer Matthew Herbert has created film scores, DJ-mixes, performance pieces, and club music that bridge the realms of populist and conceptual art like few artists before him. Working almost exclusively under the self-imposed strictures of his Dogme-like creative manifesto, P.C.C.O.M. (Personal Contract for the Composition of Music), Herbert creates highly conceptual, yet danceable, pieces that plunder real world sounds ranging from washing machines and toasters to petrol pumps and WWII bombers. Rooted in his critical stance toward the effects of economic globalization, Herbert describes his anti-art for art’s sake manifesto as a means of engaging in a political dialogue with the wider world.
