About Matthew E. White
Artist Biography
Matthew E. White won’t be pinned down by genre, opting instead to spread his deep grooves over R&B, folky gospel, pop, and frenetic indie pop. Born in 1982 in Virginia Beach, VA, White was raised by missionary parents and came up on a musical diet that included Caetano Veloso, Curtis Mayfield, and The Band. After a stint with alt-folkies The Great White Jenkins and founding improvisatory jazz ensemble Fight the Big Bull in the 2000s, he released his solo debut, Big Inner, in 2012 (the same year he founded Spacebomb Records). Featuring lush Americana like “Big Love,” that album laid the groundwork for 2015’s Fresh Blood, which added in explicit gospel influences and grand orchestration for songs like the rambling “Rock & Roll Is Cold.” Collaboration is a big part of White’s practice, too: He’s teamed up with Flo Morrissey (2017’s Gentlewoman, Ruby Man) and multidisciplinary artist Lonnie Holley (2021’s Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection). In 2021, he released the kaleidoscopic K Bay—a collection that deconstructs a sweep of musical styles, testifying to White’s range.
