Mas Aya is the solo project of Toronto-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer Brandon Valdivia. Generally known as a drummer for various bands and ensembles, including Picastro and Not the Wind, Not the Flag, Valdivia plays a wide variety of traditional instruments on his solo recordings, including wind instruments like the bansuri and the quena, as well as various forms of percussion and thumb pianos. While the project's 2012 debut incorporated these instruments into avant-rock and experimental pieces, subsequent releases featured more electronic elements and socially conscious, revolution-minded lyrics. 2021's Máscaras melded ambient textures with production inspired by footwork, dancehall, and R&B.
