Thanks to her equally tough and vulnerable vocals and expressive guitar playing, Mary Timony is one of indie rock's most creative and influential figures. Her work with Helium on 1995's The Dirt of Luck showcased her elastic yet explosive blend of classical training, punk, and shoegaze. The prog-influenced sound of Helium's final album, 1997's The Magic City, informed her early solo work, and the witchy melancholy of 2000's Mountains presaged the freak-folk artists that arrived a few years later. The harder-edged style Timony revisited on 2007's The Shapes We Make extended to her time with the early 2010s supergroup Wild Flag and the brash update of glam rock, power pop, and punk her trio Ex Hex delivered with 2014's Rips and 2019's It's Real. When she returned to her solo career with 2024's folky, introspective Untame the Tiger, it burnished her reputation as a truly independent and innovative artist.
Mary Timony has also released music as a member of Hammered Hulls, Mind Science of the Mind, The Mary Timony Band, The Spells, Helium, Autoclave, WILD FLAG, and Ex Hex.
