An adventurous jazz drummer, Mark Guiliana is known both for his work as a sideman and as a bandleader. He garnered early 21st century attention in the bands of bassist Avishai Cohen, saxophonist Donny McCaslin, and guitarist Brad Shepik. He has since earned acclaim for a variety of other boundary-pushing projects. He and pianist Brad Mehldau released 2014's electronic jazz work Mehliana: Taming the Dragon. In 2016, Guiliana played on Blackstar, David Bowie's final album. The drummer signed to Motema Music and released the quartet date Jersey in 2017, followed by the forward-thinking Beat Music! Beat Music! Beat Music! a year later. After recording a pair of dates with Baku-born keyboardist Isfar Sarabski in 2021, the drummer returned with his quartet on 2022's The Sound of Listening. In 2023, Guiliana released Mischief, a solo album for drums and electronics. He followed it with MARK in 2024 and questions (volume one) in 2025, the latter with bassist/synthesist Stu Brooks.
Mark Guiliana has also released music as a member of Halo Orbit, Heernt, and Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet.
