Pianist Maria Tipo was a pioneer in the performance and recording of the music of Domenico Scarlatti and Muzio Clementi. Beyond that, her repertory as a soloist and in chamber music ran forward into the 19th century, and she was a prominent educator. Tipo appeared as a soloist with leading orchestras outside Italy, including several in the U.S. Her recording career began in the 1950s with an album of Scarlatti sonatas, and reissues brought it into the 21st century. Tipo was in great demand as a teacher, serving at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève, the Bolzano Conservatory, and the Florence Conservatory. She gave master classes at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole and other schools. Tipo was also often found on the juries of international competitions. She died in Florence on February 10, 2025.
