On his propulsive 2019 single “Baad Ki Baatein”, a self-described “procrastination anthem”, singer-songwriter Maanu addresses his family’s concerns about him making a long-term career in music. Now that he’s one of the most exciting voices in Pakistani pop, it’s likely he’s dispelled those worries.
The Lahore-based musician, aka Rehman Afshar, always knew he wanted to be a musician. He learned the piano and the guitar as a child and started writing songs in college. But Maanu—who counts the band Sikandar Ka Mandar and rapper-singer Faris Shafi among his inspirations—also knew that he wanted to make music that resonated with his own generation. He eschewed covers, instead allowing influences such as Drake and Ed Sheeran to lightly colour his own brand of soulful, relatable Urdu and Punjabi pop and R&B. Commercial success and critical acclaim came relatively quickly and Maanu, whose initial aim was to perform at the Lahore Music Meet festival, fulfilled that dream as soon as 2020—the same year he released his debut album, Yain City.
Since then, Maanu has enjoyed a consistent run of hit singles and has collaborated with some of the most prominent names in contemporary Pakistani music, from Abdullah Siddiqui and Ali Sethi to Hasan Raheem and Natasha Noorani. His most successful tie-up thus far has been “Jhol”, a chart-topping, heartbreak-fuelled 2024 duet with Annural Khalid created for Season 15 of Coke Studio Pakistan. It marked his second contribution to the music television series, for which he co-wrote Atif Aslam’s “GO” in 2022.
