Known for his hooky, dance-pop sound, Leland is the performing name of Los Angeles-based pop singer, songwriter, and producer Brett McLaughlin. Leland initially gained attention for his work with artists like Troye Sivan, Selena Gomez, and Charli XCX while issuing his own singles, like 2015's "Aware" and 2018's "Middle of a Heartbreak."
Born in 1991 in Biloxi, Mississippi, Brett Leland McLaughlin studied music at Belmont University in Nashville, where he began his career as a songwriter working in multiple genres. Eventually relocating to Los Angeles, he began landing songs with high-profile pop stars like Allie X, Daya, Troye Sivan, and Selena Gomez. Meanwhile, recording under the name Leland, he began to make waves as a singer, being featured on songs by Keljet and Le P, and making his solo debut with the bright synth pop single "Aware" in 2015. Juggling his dual career as a hitmaking songwriter and emerging solo artist, Leland returned in the summer of 2017 with his follow-up single "Mattress." Behind the scenes, he stayed busy contributing to albums by Charli XCX, Betty Who, and Sabrina Carpenter, as well as supplying the music for RuPaul's Drag Race.
