About KUČKA
Artist Biography
Taking her stage name from a Serbian Croatian word for “bitch,” Laura Jane Lowther was born in Liverpool, England but didn’t begin tinkering with music until she had relocated to Perth with her family at age 16. There she started out as both a bedroom producer and a vocalist-for-hire, contributing in the latter role to A$AP Rocky’s debut album in 2013. The rapper was not alone in recognizing Lowther’s bewitching presence, and indelible vocal features for Paces, Cosmo’s Midnight, and Dro Carey quickly followed. But it was with Australian producer Flume that Lowther really broke through, starting with 2016’s gold-certified “Smoke & Retribution” and continuing through several more albums as Flume became more and more internationally known. At the same time, Lowther developed her solo work into a mind-bending outsider brand of electro-pop inspired in part by The Knife’s uncanny contours. After 2015’s Unconditional took seemingly familiar R&B motifs to dizzying new reaches, 2021’s Wrestling proved more personal and immersive than her many song-length collaborations in between. “With an album, you can delve into topics that are less obvious,” she told Apple Music, “but it’ll make sense once you wrap it all up.” Working with her wife, director, and artist Dillon Howl, on 2024’s Can You Hear Me Dreaming?, Lowther leaned further into fictionalized storytelling as a vital counterpoint to her frequent stylistic shifts, bringing newfound emotional depth to her mirage-like hyperpop and clubby heavy-hitters alike.
