Kit Downes is a composer, organist, and pianist known for a clean playing style and a bell-like sound no matter the setting. He started with the jazz group Troyka and then led a piano trio on 2009's Quiet Tiger. 2013's Light from Old Stars crisscrossed modern jazz, vintage blues, and global rhythms. Obsidian, his 2018 ECM debut, showcased original compositions and improvisations for solo pipe organ. In 2021, he released two duo outings: Premonitions of the Unbuilt City with pianist Matt Rogers and Subaerial with cellist Lucy Raiton. Downes returned to the piano on 2022's Vermillion. The following year saw him record A Short Diary with Seb Rochford and play organ with a Balkan all-women's vocal quintet on Medna Roso. In July 2024, Downes backed British jazz vocal legend Norma Winstone on Outpost of Dreams, and in September he appeared on Breaking the Shell playing pipe organ with guitarist Bill Frisell and drummer Andrew Cyrille.
Kit Downes has also released music as a member of Enemy, Deadeye, Kit Downes Trio, Neon Quartet, Shadowlands, and Troyka.
