Afrohouse DJ King Deetoy rules the dance floor in the sprawling Vaal Triangle area some 60 kilometers south of Johannesburg. Born Baba John Ramokhoaseaka in the Sebokeng Township, Deetoy specializes in a hard Afrotech sound he began unleashing on dancers in 2006. While the title of his 2020 magnum opus, Resurrection Soul Series, Sessions 1, reflects the spiritual vitality Deetoy finds in deep hypnotic grooves, it's 2021’s Petle Petle, a collaboration with "Scorpion Kings" Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa, that shows him at his most transcendent. The trio split the difference between the repetitive synths of Afrotech with amapiano house's relatively laidback subtleties, with Deetoy adapting to a popular new style while retaining everything holy in his house.
