Kevin Saunderson, along with high school friends Derrick May and Juan Atkins, is one of the key architects of techno music. Collectively known as the Belleville Three (named for the high school at which they met), the trio of DJs all began playing a similar mix of British synth-pop, electro, and Motor City space funk, yet each would develop his own unique musical voice. Saunderson would go on to be best known as the musical mastermind behind the house/techno outfit Inner City, which launched one of the first techno hybrids to incorporate more overt mainstream dance elements. The group scored several club hits in the U.S. and U.K., and had considerable crossover success in the latter.
