Born in Les Abymes, Guadeloupe, West Indies and raised in Orly, a suburb of Paris, Kery James began rapping in 1989 and made his recording debut a couple years later with a guest feature on MC Solaar's Qui Sème le Vent Récolte le Tempo. Shortly thereafter, James founded the rap duo Idéal Junior (aka Idéal J), which released two full-length albums, including the classic Le Combat Continue (1998). He returned in 2001 with his solo debut, Si C'était à Refaire, a Top Five hit on the French albums chart. His second and third solo albums, Ma Vérité (2005) and À l'Ombre du Show Business (2008), were similarly successful. ~ Jason Birchmeier
