New Jersey funk band the Kay-Gees worked a sound similar to that of early Kool & the Gang, largely due to the fact that Kay-Gees guitarist Kevin Bell was the younger brother or Ronald “Kool” Bell himself, who produced and co-wrote their early records. The hardcore funk grooves, splashy keyboard touches, and hard-hitting horns of the Kay-Gees made for some stone funk classics, which were later sampled by countless hip-hop artists. After Kool left them to their own devices, the band drifted towards a disco sound, disbanding by the end of the '70s.
