Singer Justin Sierreño MX is nicknamed "the Justin Bieber of Mexico." That tag was given him for his haircut, and his viral video cover of Bieber's hit "Baby," not the music he currently makes. But Sierreño MX is exceptionally good natured; he's used the moniker to professional advantage. The word "sierreño" denotes Mexican music usually made from employing three instruments whether they be bajo quinto, bajo sexto, and accordion and either a bass or a tuba. From Tepic in the state of Nayarit, Sierreño MX is a singer, guitarist and recording artist of traditional norteno music, expressed via corridos, cumbias, polkas, conjuntos and romanticos. His slightly reedy tenor and arresting good looks have made him a trendsetter in the Mexican Regional field and a pop culture phenomenon nationwide thanks to the many videos he's been uploading
since age 15. His albums and singles on the Morena label have charted at radio and at streaming while his videos--particularly his covers of Bieber, Celine Dion and Ariel Camacho--have registered tens of millions of views.
Born on July 1, 1997 in the village of Meza Del Tirador in Nayarit, as Jesus Garcia Sanchez to indigenous parents, the young Sanchez was infatuated with music from the time he could walk. as a toddler and youngster he would sing and dance on restaurant tables and at parties his family frequented. He was often bullied with racist taunts as a child because of his Indio origins, even though over 75% of his town's residents bear the same ones. Sanchez voiced his hurt and frustration through music. He learned to play guitar in high school, and with his instantly recognizable singing voice began covering the pop songs of the day. In his hometown, friends, relatives and even classmates began remarking that his hairstyle and voice resembled the Canadian singing star's. Sanchez investigated and was soon taken with Bieber's chart-topping smash "Baby," his press image and subsequent tracks. In 2014 he uploaded his own cover of "Baby," to Facebook. It went viral in large part due to the distinctive tonality of his voice and that his lyrics were a mix of Huichol, the indigenous language of his ethnic group and English. While he received thousands of negative comments, he deemed no publicity bad publicity, and was convinced music was his calling. He began adding more videos to both Facebook and You Tube, including an equally viral reading of Celine Dion's version of the Titanic theme, "My Heart Will Go On." The attention drew a local television station to his home for an interview and his name was established. Though his guitar playing at this stage was questionable, and his voice quite unusual for a male norteno singer, Sanchez was encouraged by the response his videos generated and he began using the nickname as his stage moniker.
As Justin Sierreño MX, he met producer Alfonzo "Poncho" Meza at a party. After hearing the young singer, the producer offered him a recording contract, guitar-and-singing lessons. These resulted in his 2017 debut album Te Fallé which proved a turning point. Te Fallé registered several hit videos and streaming singles including "La Antojadita," "Taquitos de Frijoles," and "Lies." With Meza's guidance, Sierreño MX made the rounds of radio and television stations and toured regionally. When it was time to record again, the singer announced via social media that he would be writing much of the material for his followup album. Las Cosas Cambiaron appeared in 2018 to largely positive reviews for its regional hit single "Tuy Lo Tienes Todo," which charted on virtually all streaming services, precipitating his first national tour. ~ Thom Jurek
