A fan once told Josh Brar that his face doesn't match his voice. But the Punjabi singer and songwriter has nevertheless captivated listeners with an unassuming persona that is paired with a voice that resonates deeply.
Son of Punjabi music mainstay Raj Brar, young Josh joined the school choir at first because practice took place under the shade of a big tree, but he soon discovered a passion for music in itself. Learning instruments including the tabla, guitar and piano, he began covering songs by Punjabi greats such as Gurdas Maan and Diljit Dosanjh.
Brar’s debut single, 2024’s “Tere Bina Na Guzara E”, topped streaming charts in countries including India, Pakistan and Canada. The song’s universal theme of love was a draw and Brar has attributed its success to its calmness, purity and positivity.
The same year, Brar released another love song, “Kujh Baatan”, with composer Bunty Bains and went on to support Punjabi-Canadian star AP Dhillon at his Delhi show. Keeping traditional Punjabi folk influences and modern pop sensibilities alive, Brar also pays tribute to his father during live shows, exhibiting a deep emotional connection to his roots.
