At a time when racial integration was frowned upon, and just this side of legal, vocalist and composer Johnny Clegg formed the multi-racial South African Zulu/pop band Juluka with college friend Sipho Mchunu. Their innovative fusion of fierce mbaqanga rhythms, a dash of Celtic feel, and universally appealing pop melodies proved hugely popular at home and overseas, even without the support of the government-sponsored radio station. Juluka recorded seven albums before breaking up in 1985. The next year, Clegg re-emerged with a new group, Savuka, and found it much easier to tour both the increasingly liberal South Africa and overseas. Clegg launched his solo career in 2002.
