b. John Maus, 12 November 1943, New York, USA. Originally a child actor, Maus moved to the west coast to pursue a career as a musician and in the early 60s formed the Dalton Brothers with Scott Engel. By 1964, Gary Leeds joined the duo who soon changed their name to the Walker Brothers, relocating to England the following year. Throughout his period with the Walker Brothers, Maus retained a second pseudonym, John Stewart, which can be seen on the b-side of many of the trio’s recordings. Interestingly, it was Maus who sang lead on the Walker Brothers’ debut ‘Pretty Girls Everywhere’, but once the follow-up, ‘Love Her’, became a hit, Scott Walker enjoyed the prestige of singing on all future a-sides. Maus nevertheless proved himself an excellent high harmony singer and his six feet 4 inches height and sports star frame made him an obvious sex symbol counterpoint to the sensual ‘little boy lost’ appeal of his partner. Disputes between the ‘brothers’ ended their collaboration in 1967 but Maus soon returned with the minor hit ‘Annabella’ and a pleasant solo album. Unable to match the level of fame he enjoyed as a Walker Brother, Maus eventually returned to Los Angeles. With his solo career on ice, he, not surprisingly, accepted Scott Walker’s invitation to resurrect the Walker Brothers name in 1975. The reunion lasted until 1978 and three albums were issued. Early in the 80s, Scott was supposedly producing an album for Maus and his wife Brandy, but the project failed to reach fruition. Having built his own studio, Maus studied to become a recording engineer and set up the publishing company Arena Artistes Association. He elected to record some of the songs he had stockpiled, resulting in the pleasant soft rock collection You.
