Although Jimmy Ruffin only had one major hit single during his tenure at Motown Records, that song-- 1966's "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?"--is one of the label's most iconic singles. Born May 7, 1939 in Collinsville, Mississippi, Ruffin is the elder brother of David Ruffin, the Temptations' lead singer from 1964 to 1968, though his gruff vocals feature more of a rough-edged southern soul sound than his sibling's smoother style. Though his hitmaking years ended in the 1960s, Ruffin remained a popular figure on the R&B circuit, often performing with David as the Ruffin Brothers.
