In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. I remember listening to Sweet Honey in the Rock at a festival as a kid...it made my heart swell and brought tears. And, I remember being under a table at a dance hall in Jamaica. I played with local kids as the bass pulsed around us.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Jimmy Cliff, The Harder They Come (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) John Coltrane, A Love Supreme Sly & The Family Stone, There's a Riot Goin' On These three albums have been constant sources of inspiration. I grew up with a lot of folk around all the time, but these were three that shaped how I approach music.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “My Father's Guitar” This is barely a song; it's an homage to an instrument. A true story. I didn't grow up with my dad in the house, and creating this song on the guitar he gave me was a healing process for all three of us: me, my dad, and the 1968 Gibson.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? I played my album "Pretty Songs about Death" for a regional meeting of palliative care/end of life specialists at a hospital in Dallas, Texas. To bring these reflections to heroes that deal with these issues every day was beautiful and humbling.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I'm still searching for this loose, half improvised, half rehearsed, poly rhythmic, ritualistic, collectivist, social political dance music that is bubbling in my heart.
