One of techno's biggest names, Jeff Mills is championed for his music's relentless pursuit of futurism and his intense DJ sets (utilizing up to four turntables or CD decks and a drum machine). A founding member of Underground Resistance in the late '80s, Mills helped build the Detroit institution's ideology, roster, and back catalog, and went on to sign with German label Tresor, kicked off with 1992's Waveform Transmission, Vol. 1. Mills' UR-related releases, including "The Punisher" and "Seawolf," fuse elements of hardcore acid and industrial techno to the sparse Detroit aesthetic. Subsequent releases for his own Axis label are more abstract, while releases on Purpose Maker, such as the 1997 classic "The Bells," include Mills' most club-friendly material. He has often ventured into ambient and even classical music with conceptual albums including his 2000 and 2023 scores for Fritz Lang's Metropolis and 2024's The Eyewitness.
