Hailed as the Crown Prince of Bhangra, Jazzy B is a pioneering force who’s redefined Punjabi music for the global stage. Born in Nawanshahr, Punjab and raised in Surrey, Canada, the artist aka Jaswinder Singh Bains has a style that blends traditional Punjabi folk, Western hip-hop and urban swagger and that resonates deeply with the South Asian diaspora and has influenced Punjabi stars such as AP Dhillon and Chani Nattan.
His 1993 debut album Ghugian Da Jorra marked the beginning of a prolific streak of experiments, one that led to Folk ’N’ Funky in 1995 and Folkal Attraction in 1997. Encouraged by longtime producer Sukhshinder Shinda, Jazzy B moved to the UK not only to study medicine but also further his music career. Still commanding the attention of Punjabis back home, the music video for “Surma” featured future Bollywood actor John Abraham. It was from Jazzy B’s 2004 global breakout album Romeo with Shinda, which also spawned the playful Bhangra song “Dil Luteya” with reggae star Apache Indian. As far as worlds-collide collabs go, Jazzy B would raise the bar with Snoop Dogg on 2015 single “Most Wanted”.
Alongside the occasional acting role, Jazzy B went on to deliver albums including Maharajas in 2011, a tribute to the Punjabi singer Kuldeep Manak who Jazzy considers a profound influence. In turn, Punjabi-Canadian hitmakers such as AP Dhillon tapped him for “315” in 2024 and Chani Nattan and Inderpal Moga brought him in for “COOLIN”, which was nominated at the 2025 JUNO Awards for South Asian Music Recording of the Year.
