Artist Biography
Jay Wheeler's “La Curiosidad” has become synonymous with Saturday night perreo throwdowns. But before the Apple Music Up Next artist’s 2020 blockbuster collaboration with DJ Nelson and Myke Towers came to fruition, the reggaetón and trap superstar had to tap into viral fame. Wheeler was born José Ángel López Martínez in 1994, in Salinas, Puerto Rico. He got his musical start singing at church, where he learned to play the piano and developed an interest in production. His song “Ahora Estoy Mejor” gained a massive online following in 2016, earning Wheeler the nickname “La Voz Favorita” (“The Favorite Voice”) and landing him a record deal with Dynamic Records two years later. A mentorship with hitmaker DJ Nelson accelerated his rise, leading to numerous notable 2020 collaborations—including a guest spot on Farruko's “No Te Enamores” remix and the romantic curve ball of “I Love You” alongside reggaetón OG Tito El Bambino. Jay Wheeler has since cemented his place in the pantheon of perreo superstars, commanding titanic features from El Alfa, Mora, Jhayco, and Mexican pop band Reik on his 2022 LP Emociones.
