Born in Calgary in 1995, pianist Jan Lisiecki has the music of his parental homeland of Poland in his bloodstream. At age 13, Lisiecki’s precocious performance of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 at a festival in Warsaw gained widespread critical attention. Just two years later, he signed an exclusive contract with the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label and began putting his Chopin interpretations on record. A dazzling recording of the Études (2013) highlighted Lisiecki’s instinctive feeling for Chopin’s style, while his complete set of the Nocturnes (2022) is one of the most introspective on disc. Memorable albums of music by Mozart (2012), Schumann (2016), Mendelssohn (2019), and Beethoven (2020) bear similar hallmarks of exquisite poise and penetrating musical intelligence. Lisiecki’s exceptionally clean fingerwork and pearl-like sonority recall the great Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman, a comparison that testifies to his interpretive maturity and free-flowing talent.
