No songwriting/production team has combined stylistic innovation and commercial success over a greater length of time than Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The Grammy-winning duo emerged with the Time, and soon catalyzed the electronic sound of contemporary R&B in the post-disco era. Major hits with the likes of the S.O.S. Band and Cheryl Lynn were mere warning shots ahead of Janet Jackson's Control (1986), a quintuple-platinum triumph. As their production style became broadly imitated, the partners adapted to innovations made by those they happened to inspire and continued to stress traditional songcraft, as evidenced by over 40 Top Ten pop hits including chart-toppers such as Jackson's "That's the Way Love Goes" (1994), Boyz II Men's "On Bended Knee" (1994), and Usher's "U Remind Me" (2001). The Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees released their first album as headliners, Jam & Lewis, Volume One, in 2021.
