Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. I was introduced to music through singing gospel music in my church choir at the age of 6, with the iconic Barnes Family.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Erykah Badu, Mama's Gun Kanye West, Graduation Lauryn Hill, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill I am inspired by beautiful storytelling and unique word play. Erykah Badu, Kanye West and Lauryn Hill have been the soundtrack to my life. My dad introduced me to all 3 artists & I connect to these albums because they got me through some tough times.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Letter to Self” This song has a very special place in my heart. It was originally a poem that I wrote for my debut novel “The Caged Bird is Missing”. It’s about the effects of self-hatred & how it can eventually turn into a breakthrough for self-love.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? I released my first album two days before my dad died of cancer. He was my biggest fan. I was sitting on unreleased music for years because I was afraid to fail but I was even more afraid for him to die before I shared my music with the world.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I want to perform with Beyoncé or Doja Cat, rap for my fans at Rolling Loud and collaborate with my favorite rapper and fellow North Carolina native, J.Cole.
