The onetime husband-and-wife duo of Ike and Tina Turner set a precedent for what’s possible in the world of soul music. Assembled in the mid-1950s, the twosome and their backing band the Revue became well known for wildly entertaining live shows that consisted of ferocious singing, tantalizing dancing, and unparalleled showmanship. With their 1962 album, Dynamite, Ike and Tina Turner refined their raucous style, while still continuing to embrace a playfully combative vocal dynamic that, at times, spilled over into real-life hostility. By 1966, with the album River Deep - Mountain High led by the fully orchestrated and bombastic title track, the pair had grown into the more polished sound of the coming era. Ike and Tina Turner would reach international acclaim with their 1971 album, Workin’ Together, which was the home to “Proud Mary,” an electrifying cover of the 1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival standard. After years of enduring abuse, Tina filed for divorce in 1976 before staging a major comeback as a solo artist in the ‘80s; Ike continued to make music up until his death in 2007.
