Saxophonist and composer Idris Ackamoor is founder and leader of Afrofuturist jazz group the Pyramids (now called Ankhestra). Their sound emerged from fertile creative aesthetic terrain previously explored by Sun Ra and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. From 1970 to 1976, the Pyramids independently released Lalibela, King of Kings, and Birth, Speed, Merging. Ackamoor also played with Chico Freeman and the Cecil Taylor Creative Orchestra. Following renewed interest in remastered editions of the Pyramids' catalogue, Ackamoor re-formed the band in 2011 for Otherworldly. In 2016, Idris Ackamoor & the Pyramids signed with the U.K.'s Strut and released We Be All Africans. They followed in 2018 with the Malcolm Catto-produced An Angel Fell. Shaman! followed in 2021, and Afro Futuristic Dreams appeared in 2023. On Record Store Day 2025, Ackamoor released Artistic Being, drawn from a 2024 live performance with Danny Glover and Rhodessa Jones.
Idris Ackamoor has also released music as a member of The Pyramids.
