In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. I come from a musical family; my Mum is a pianist, my sister is a singer and my Dad taught me my first few guitar chords. We used to harmonise together in church and in the car on family trips. My Mum says I sang before I spoke!
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Jellyfish, Spilt Milk (Remastered) The Beach Boys, Pet Sounds XTC, Nonsuch Pet Sounds is the most beautifully realised album by my favourite band. The writing and arrangements are like nothing else; the depth of emotion in the chords alone is staggering before they even add the melodies, words and layers of instrumentation.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Running Away (with Sophie Ellis-Bextor)” Running Away is a catchy little number. I enjoyed working with Sophie, she was brilliant in the studio. I asked Jo Webb to play some guitar on it and he ended up drowning it in synths instead. We went on to produce "The Game Begins" album together.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? I wrote Say The Word with Graham Gouldman. He decided it was appropriate to include in the 10cc set list, which was a great honour. The first time we performed the song at the Royal Albert Hall was a particularly proud moment for me.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I have many ideas for future projects, and I like to think that my music will be taking some major twists and turns as I go forward. I love the sheer scope of music, it's all up for grabs.
Iain Hornal has also released music as a member of 10cc.
