Though the two producers in UK drum ’n’ bass duo Hybrid Minds live hundreds of miles apart—Josh White (a.k.a. Haste) resides in Hertfordshire, outside London, while Lowe (a.k.a. Sensa) is up north in Yorkshire, near Leeds—the music they make together radiates a powerful sense of intimacy. When the two met as DJs at the same radio station in the late 2000s, both were better known for playing harder strains of the genre. But they shared a fondness for smoother, more soulful styles, so they turned their attention to wistful atmospheres and ethereal vocals on early singles like 2012’s “Silver Linings.” With their 2014 debut album, Mountains, Hybrid Minds established themselves as leaders of the liquid drum ’n’ bass scene, wrapping silky keys and rolling breaks around a wide range of uniformly yearning vocal features. In the years since, they’ve continued to test the limits of their sound, pushing into R&B on songs like 2017’s “Brighter Days” and even drawing the Australian alt-metal band Pendulum to the soft side on the lush, anthemic 2021 collaboration “Louder Than Words.”
